NDIS Language

Navigating the NDIS can be tricky! There are a lot of acronyms and terms that are thrown around, and in the Home and Living space this is particularly evident. Below we have listed common acronyms and terms used by the NDIS so that you can become more fluent and confident in your understanding of terms and references.

 

  • NDIS – National Disability Insurance Scheme – The scheme that funds disability supports to eligible Participants.
  • NDIA – National Disability Insurance Agency – The agency that governs the NDIS.
  • ARF – Access Request Form – The form used to apply for NDIS funding.
  • H&L – Home and Living – NDIS term for accommodation and support.
  • SDA – Specialist Disability Accommodation – Specially designed housing for people with high support needs.
  • ILO – Individualised Living Options – A support arrangmenet designed for those with moderate to high support needs which combines formal and informal supports.
  • SIL – Supported Independent Living – 24/7 support based on a roster for those with complex support needs.
  • RFS – Request for Service – A form that is sent by the NDIS to a provider of Support Coordination that sets out how to support an NDIS Participant.
  • AAT – Administrative Appeals Tribunal – The legal setting in which unresolved NDIS reviews are heard in court.
  • Section 48 – Notification of a Change of Circumstances – A request (document) sent to the NDIA to ask for a review due to a change in someones circumstances.
  • Section 100 – Request for a review of a reviewable decision – A request to change a decision in an NDIS plan, this must be submitted within 90 days of a new plan being issued.
  • Section 34 – The part of the NDIS Act that sets out Reasonable and Necessary Supports
  • R&N – Reasonable and Necessary – Legislation that sets out how the NDIS makes decisions about a persons supports.
  • FCA – Functional Capacity Assessment – An assessment presented in a report that the NDIS can use to make determinations about what is reasonable and necessary.
  • BSP – Behaviour Support Plan – A plan for supporting someone with behaviours of concer.
  • PBS – Positive Behaviour Support – The practice of supporting someone to engage in social behaviours through specialist intervention.
  • OT – Occupational Therapist
  • OPA – Office of the Public Advocate – A human rights organisation which promotes the diversity and inclusion of all people.
  • WHODAS – World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule – A tool used by OT’s to determine a perosns functional impairments.
  • ABAS – Adaptive Behaviour Asessment Scale – A tool used by Allied Health Providers to determine the impacts a persons behaviour has on their life.
